‘Alison is a highly qualified and fabulous photographer. Her work speaks for itself!  I attended a photography weekend run by Alison in the Lake District uk.  It was in a group setting so you get to meet like minded people and it was immense fun. Despite the group setting Alison was attentive to each one of us, giving us one on one time and helping us get to grips with our equipment, settings and composition.  The Lake District is a photographers dream. You get to explore wonderful countryside and capture some great shots.  I feel it improved my photography in understanding light, different weather conditions, camera settings and composition.  There were different levels of experience within the group, from beginners to more intermediate photographers. There was also a range of different cameras, I own an SLR but others had more point and shoot cameras. I feel the course was suited to all levels. You will learn lots and have loads of fun! I highly recommend Alison, she is warm , friendly, approachable but also professional, knowledgeable and high qualified.  It will help take your photographer to a different level. Do it!’

‘It was really great meeting Alison. She made us feel very relaxed while taking photos of us doing regular YHA stuff, partly because she seemed very enthusiastic about what we were doing and was very good when working with people of all ages.’

Joe ~ YHA Member

‘When I met Ally last summer in her role as a YHA photographer I was immediately impressed by her cheerful and engaging approach with everyone she met. In a very short time of chatting to guests they seemed delighted to get involved and be photographed by Ally… and the results speak for themselves!  She quickly become a welcomed member of the team, and a memorable part of many of our guests hostel experience. She embodies all of the YHAs Spirit values, and always seems happy to go the extra mile to achieve the desired results.  She was very conscientious and professional at all times, with a methodical approach to taking shots of the hostel and guests, always paying great attention to detail.  She did an amazing job of editing the thousands of photos she took, which I know was a very time consuming business. Ever since then (being a social media whizz), she’s spent a lot of time promoting YHA whenever she has the chance. She is a very talented and hard working individual, and a true YHA ambassador! A great attribute to this organisation and it’s charitable objectives.’

Phil Maynard ~ Hostel Manager at YHA Perranporth

‘Alison Petty is a long time user of the YHA and an active member. She approached us in early 2011 with the hope of participating in our volunteer warden scheme. Whilst we didn’t have any opportunities at the time we did enquire quite innocently about her interests in photography and whether she’d like to use this skill to take some shots of hostels in the South West of England.      At the time we had no idea that we were about to uncover such an enthusiastic, talented and conscientious person. Alison spent several months in our hostels and produced an incredible portfolio of photographs which we have used for all types of media to support our hostels from web to press to social media.      Not only were the results of Alison’s work incredible but she was also a fantastic individual to work with. She always delivered exactly what we needed and would go above and beyond the call of duty to get the job done.      Alison is truly worth quadruple her weight in gold.’

Ben Atwell  ~ YHA London / Operations Manager

‘Alison is one in a million. She came to spend the Autumn of 2012 travelling the Lakes hostels not just photographing them but helping with the social media presence in the Lakes as well.  By the end of her time with us she was truly one of the team and has been missed ever since.      Her portfolio of work has been used on so many projects since and has provided us with such a fantastic photographic archive of the hostels, the staff and members and the activities we offer.’

Andy Barnett ~ YHA Lake District / Operations Manager

‘It was great to have Alison around last Autumn and she very quickly became a part of the Lake District team (not just at YHA Ambleside). It very quickly came to feel like she’d always been here. A pleasure to host, to work with and just to spend time with.   She is very passionate about her work, and about what we do in the YHA, and really ‘gets’ hostels and hostellers, which you could see in the way she was with our guests as well as staff.’

Phil Mills ~ YHA Ambleside / Team Member

‘We were lucky enough to work with Ally on a number of occasions last summer. On top of taking a series of more conventional interiors shots Ally took it upon herself to completely overhaul our Pitchup.com & TripAdvisor pages and also acted as staff photographer for a busy live music night.      Ally’s hostel photos are quite simply amazing… Way more than just pristine empty rooms, Ally’s vibrant photographs of staff & guests interacting at busy hostels convey a real sense of what it is to stay with YHA and with a keen eye for all the little details that make us unique she really brings the youth hostel world to life.      We are looking forward to seeing her in the YHA Borrowdale valley again soon.’

Christopher Edis ~ YHA Borrowdale Hostel Manager

‘Alison spent a lot of time with us in the Lakes last season. She was always good fun to be around and happy to help out wherever she could.  On one particular occasion when we unexpectedly had to organise the prize for a competition winner, Alison gave up her Saturday day-off and came to the hostel at very short notice to take the photographs for me.’

Dan Flanagan ~ Group Bookings Manager at YHA Ambleside

‘With a keen eye and enthusiasm to back it up, Alison is the ideal person to have on site picking out a hostel’s photogenic side. Her professionalism is matched only by her awareness to back off when those busy times hit – and even then she’s willing to help out with serving, doing the pots or generally being another pair of hands.     What started out for us as another person about the place quickly turned into a friendly face and pleasure to have around. Send her over to the Peaks please!’

Mark Fell ~ YHA Ambleside / Team Member

‘It was great having Alison around. Her enthusiasm for looking at things differently was infectious. She certainly inspired (that’s a good YHA buzz word!) me to get my camera out and examine the world around me more closely. Her affinity for the YHA meant that she could make the most mundane thing look interesting whilst highlighting the more characterful parts of our youth hostels. Her photography captures the very essence of our organisation.’
